By quantile breakpoints over the 169 countries with data: countries are sorted by value and the classes are cut so each holds a similar number of countries. The method (linear-interpolation quantiles) is fixed and deterministic — the same data always produces the same map, on the page, in the embed and in the MCP tool.

Each country shows its latest available reading — reference year 2021 – 2024 across the 169 countries with data. Because international series publish on different schedules, individual countries can differ by a year or two; the map shows the newest honest value rather than a thinner same-year subset.

Gray means no reading: 7 of the 176 dataset countries report no value for this metric (96.0% coverage). Countries without data occupy no rank and are never filled with an estimate — the legend's “No data” item keeps the gap visible instead of hiding it.

Drag the slider or press play to step through 2002–2024 (about 0.6 seconds per year). The color classes are computed once from the latest year and then stay locked, so the animation compares like with like instead of re-scaling every frame. A country without a reading for the selected year keeps its most recent earlier reading and is marked “data as of YEAR” — sparse metrics such as the Gini index report only a subset of countries in any single year, and the stats line under the map states exactly how many report that year.
