How to read this map
Countries are grouped into classes by quantile breakpoints: the countries with data are sorted by value and the classes are cut so each one holds a similar number of countries. Class widths therefore differ — a wide class means the values are spread out there, not an error.
This Infant mortality map uses a colorblind-safe sequential ramp (viridis): darker purple marks lower values, brighter yellow marks higher values.
The year slider turns the map into a time player: class boundaries are computed once from the latest year and then stay locked while you scrub or play, so a color means the same thing in every year of the animation. A country without a reading for the selected year keeps its most recent earlier value, labeled “data as of YEAR”; before a country's first observation it stays gray.
Countries without a reading stay gray and appear as a “No data” item in the legend — they occupy no rank and are never replaced by an invented value.

FAQ
How are the color classes on this Infant mortality map chosen?
By quantile breakpoints over the 166 countries with data: countries are sorted by value and the classes are cut so each holds a similar number of countries. The method (linear-interpolation quantiles) is fixed and deterministic — the same data always produces the same map, on the page, in the embed and in the MCP tool.
Which year do the Infant mortality values come from?
Each country shows its latest available reading — reference year 2024 across the 166 countries with data. Because international series publish on different schedules, individual countries can differ by a year or two; the map shows the newest honest value rather than a thinner same-year subset.
Why are some countries gray on the Infant mortality map?
Gray means no reading: 10 of the 176 dataset countries report no value for this metric (94.3% coverage). Countries without data occupy no rank and are never filled with an estimate — the legend's “No data” item keeps the gap visible instead of hiding it.
How does the Infant mortality year slider work?
Drag the slider or press play to step through 2002–2024 (about 0.6 seconds per year). The color classes are computed once from the latest year and then stay locked, so the animation compares like with like instead of re-scaling every frame. A country without a reading for the selected year keeps its most recent earlier reading and is marked “data as of YEAR” — sparse metrics such as the Gini index report only a subset of countries in any single year, and the stats line under the map states exactly how many report that year.
Can I export or embed the map?
Yes. The export buttons render a PNG (2×) or a vector SVG with the map, legend and an attribution line naming the data source and its license, plus Natural Earth (public domain) for the boundaries. The embed page adds a copy-paste iframe for any site.
Where does the Infant mortality data come from?
From the same open dataset as every GlobeVS tool — the #1 value on this map (S. Sudan, 71.9‰) is the same number you get in the country comparison, the rankings table and the country profiles, computed once from the committed pipeline products at build time.
