How this tool works
- Press start — the quiz deals ten indicators, from GDP per capita and life expectancy to population and CO₂ emissions; every round reshuffles which ten appear.
- Read the question — “Which country has the highest GDP per capita?” — and pick one of the four country options: the world #1 plus three others that also have a reading, most of them from the same continent.
- The answer is revealed instantly: the picked option is marked, and the panel beside the question draws a small choropleth world map of that very indicator — color-graded exactly like the Metric Maps pages — with the correct country outlined.
- The feedback line spells out the numbers: the correct country's world rank (always #1 — the question asked for the highest) and its actual value, with the reference year.
- After ten questions you get your score, a copyable result line and your best round (saved only in your browser) — press play again and ten fresh indicators are dealt.
Data & method
Questions come from the same open indicator dataset as every GlobeVS tool — World Bank Open Data (CC BY 4.0), UNDP Human Development Report (CC BY 3.0 IGO) and the Natural Earth geometry behind area and our derived density — joined per country exactly as the compare tool, the ranking pages and the metric maps join them. The correct answer is computed, not curated: it is always rank #1 of the ONE ranking implementation those surfaces share (value descending, slug-ascending tie-break), so the quiz can never disagree with a rankings table. Only direction-unambiguous indicators enter the curated pool — questions where “highest” means more of the thing asked (33 of the 46 indicators; growth rates, net migration and inflation read across a sign change and are left out, as are negative-superlative metrics like mortality). On top of that, an eligibility check runs on the current data at deal time: an indicator needs at least 60 readings and a single clear leader — where countries tie at the top (electrification at 100 %), the “right” answer would be arbitrary, so that indicator sits the round out. Distractors are always countries that have a reading for the same indicator, preferring the same continent — close enough to be tempting, never ambiguous. Which indicators can come up in the quiz?
33 indicators are in the curated pool — population, GDP and GDP per capita, life expectancy, the Human Development Index, area, density, urbanization, fertility, CO₂ emissions, internet use, tourism, military spending and more. Of those, 30 pass the deal-time eligibility check on the current data (enough country readings and a single clear leader), and each round deals 10 of them at random. Growth rates, net migration and inflation are left out on purpose — their rankings cross zero, so “highest” would not mean what the question asks.
Is the correct answer always rank #1?
Yes — the question asks which country has the highest value, so the answer is computed as rank #1 of the same ranking the /rankings pages, the /maps choropleths and the Country Compare tool use (value descending, ties broken by slug, countries without a reading excluded). That is why ties at the top disqualify an indicator: fifteen countries at 100 % electrification have no single “highest”, so the question would be arbitrary.
Where does the data come from?
From the same open data as every GlobeVS tool: World Bank Open Data (CC BY 4.0), the UNDP Human Development Report (CC BY 3.0 IGO) and Natural Earth boundaries (public domain) for area and the derived density. Nothing is hand-typed per quiz — the pools are generated from the committed dataset at load time, and the reveal map colors countries with the exact quantile classes the Metric Maps pages use.
How are the wrong options chosen?
From countries that also have a reading for that indicator, preferring the same continent as the answer — three distinct names that are never the correct answer. Restricting distractors to countries with data keeps every option honest: a gray “no data” country on the reveal map can never appear as a choice.
Where is my best score stored?
Only in your own browser, in localStorage — no account, no server, nothing leaves your device. Clearing the site's data resets the best round. Every round is 10 questions, one point each; the summary copies a one-line result you can paste into a chat.
